Electrical Connectors – A Number Of Cases that Result to Failure
Electrical power connectors can be relied upon for the proper operation of an electrical appliance or an electronic system. Therefore, if these elements fail, then the entire functioning of other products will fail as well. These breakdowns can be caused by both electrical and mechanical surroundings. While this is sad to take note of, you have to know about the scenarios that make the output breakdown so you may be able to deal with them accordingly later on.
There are three common instances that make electrical power connectors breakdown. Stress relaxation is one of these three scenarios. The last two cases are referred as corrosion and contact fretting. Understand more about how these three breakdowns take place in the system. This is in order for you to realize the reasons behind why electrical power malfunctions to render its tasks even if manufacturers claim that it can withstand the most complex of situations.
First type of failure known as stress relaxation
Stress relaxation takes place when electric powers are exposed to a large amount of pressure for an extended period of time. This amount of pressure transforms not the size of the connectors but the foundation of the metallic element. In the end, this results to weakening as well as slackening of the connection. As temperature intensifies and as aluminum materials are added in the output, the case of stress relaxation worsens.
The second type of breakdown known as corrosion
Corrosion is a breakdown that takes place when electrical power connectors are exposed to outdoor environments together with severe instances. The first manifestations of corrosion in electrical components are seen through the thin film development situated on the contacts of the connectors. When compared to corrosion in other systems, this is not a usual occurrence.
The thin film development cannot be easily seen by merely looking at the connector. Therefore, you cannot foresee the extent of damage on the output. When the thin film becomes larger, chemical properties of the product will be damaged as well.
Failure # 3 – contact fretting
Contact fretting is also a usual breakdown in electrical power connectors. This case is a result of alterations in vibration and temperature. It can also be triggered when one of the connectors in the output suddenly shifts its locations. This may then extend to corrosion plights and at the worse may sacrifice the electrical current transfer in the output. To solve this kind of problem, there is a need to lubricate the contact material.
